Criminal Records Discrimination Metaanalysis

Discrimination against individuals with criminal records is not only unfair and unjust, but it can also hinder the rehabilitation and reintegration of formerly convicted individuals into society (Jacobs 2015; Kirk and Wakefield 2018; Pager 2003; Rovira 2024). Inspired by Devah Pager’s seminal audit study on the impact of a criminal record on employment prospects in the U.S. (Pager 2003), the past 25 years have seen substantial research across various countries aimed at examining the employment effects of a criminal record. In collaboration with Dave Kirk (University of Pennsylvania) and Mike Vuolo (The Ohio State University), we are now conducting the first meta-analysis of field experiments investigating employment discrimination against individuals with criminal records. Meta-analyses enable researchers to pool study results, capitalizing on study similarities while accounting for differences across studies (Field and Gillett 2010; Tong and Guo 2022). You can get access to the OSF webpage of our project, that includes the preregistration document, here: https://osf.io/5hzqv/

We would be very interested in your assistance with identifying any meta-analyses related to criminal records. Below, you’ll find an updated list of field experiments on discrimination based on criminal records that we are currently reviewing. If you are aware of any additional studies, please email me at marti.rovira[at]upf.edu.

We are specifically seeking field experiments examining employer behavior toward job applicants with criminal conviction records. To be included, studies must feature a control group of applicants with no criminal record, and the allocation of job openings must be randomized. Since our focus is on comparing the impact of a criminal record with no record, we will exclude studies where the comparison involves applicants with criminal records and an additional ‘treatment’ aimed at mitigating the record’s effects (e.g., applicants showing both a criminal record and a certificate of rehabilitation).

Thank you for your help!
